ACT NOW! 3G NETWORKS WILL BE SWITCHED OFF IN SOME COUNTRIES IN 2022

The Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), the 3G wireless mobile telecommunication technology, is slowly but surely coming to the end. Please note, the following mobile service providers have already announced plans to close their 3G networks in the coming year 2022: AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, Vodafone, Telekom, KPN, Telefonica, O2, Telia, EE (BT Group), CELCOM Axiata and others. Here are a few quotes from some of them below…

“2G and 3G shutdowns by operators around the world are accelerating as they seek to reform spectrum towards 4G and 5G along with reducing operating costs for their networks. 2021 will see the highest number of 2G and 3G shutdowns so far. For the consumer market, device refreshes and consumer awareness make this transition much simpler than for the IoT market. Many IoT devices have long lifetimes and are deployed in hard-to-reach places which make replacements difficult and expensive. For new IoT deployments, many are looking to eSIM and newer access technologies such as LTE-M and NB-IoT to future proof their solutions.“, said François Blanchard, VP IoT Sales EMEA, Truphone.

''We’re phasing out our 3G network in February 2022 to make room for an even better one that will improve your experience.'' - AT&T Wireless.

“We are on track with our plan for nationwide 3G shutdown in stages from end-September until Dec 31, 2021. This is something we work very closely with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.”, said Mohamad Idham Nawaw, CEO of CELCOM Axiata Bhd.

''As of July 1, 2022, T-Mobile’s older 3G UMTS network will be retired.'' - T-Mobile.

''We are actively decommissioning our 3G CDMA network and expect to be completed by no later than December 31st, 2022.'' - Verizon.

IT IS TIME TO ACT NOW

In essence, this technology is going through a gradual elimination process and transition to a 4G LTE type of network and beyond. Mobile service providers upgrade to the latest technologies and once in while shut down older services to free up transmission frequencies and build the infrastructure to support new services such as 4G and 5G mobile networks. Please note that vehicle GPS devices that currently only support the 3G network may no longer work afterwards.

Keeping in mind the global shortage within the semiconductor industry and to avoid business operation disruptions in the near future, we would like to strongly advise all our customers and business partners in relevant countries to switch to FMC series vehicle GPS trackers supporting 4G LTE Cat 1/ 2G networks.
