We all have our own driving style and do not always think about how this affects fuel consumption and vehicle maintenance. Aggressive acceleration, hard braking, cornering, and overspeeding are not only dangerous for the driver but also for other road users. In addition, these instances of inappropriate driver behaviour result in operating costs that could otherwise be avoided.

SOLUTION


Green Driving functionality is available with every Teltonika GPS tracker and can be applied to various industry needs. Insurance companies usually apply this scenario in their applications with FMx880 series devices, while FMx130 series vehicle GPS trackers, together with the Green Driving scenario, are widely used in the car-sharing industry. However, for beginners in telematics, we recommend using FMx920 series of vehicle trackers to experience the benefits of the Green Driving solution.


How it works - thanks to this functionality, GPS trackers collect data on acceleration, braking, and harsh cornering and send it directly to a server. This information is analysed immediately and, if the values received are outside the set thresholds, the device sends a command to the LED or buzzer connected via DOUT, warning the driver that he or she is driving inefficiently.


In addition, all devices with the FMB BASE firmware 03.29 offer an additional function on the FMB configurator, which allows threshold values to be calculated automatically according to the specifics of a vehicle. Thanks to this, there is no need to worry about the values to be set for the Green Driving scenario, as Teltonika provides recommendations with this calculator, saving business partners time and simplifying the configuration process in general. 



What is also important, there are two sources for Green Driving operation – GPS data and accelerometer. The desired one can be selected in the FMB configurator. Such data is fairly reliable and requires no extra effort to make it work. On the other side, accelerometer data is more precise and ensures uninterrupted operation even when a GPS signal is not available, for example, in tunnels or underground parking lots.


However, to utilise accelerometer data correctly, the device has to perform an autocalibration process, which is automatic, as the name implies but may take some time. Read more about the use case technicalities here.


To further motivate drivers, it is possible to evaluate their driving performance and allocate salary or bonuses accordingly. The Green Driving solution is a very good example of how modern technology can not only help develop business but also improve road safety and reduce the negative impact on our planet.
